Types of Carpet

Cut Pile Carpet

Cut pile carpeting is traditionally used in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, dens and great rooms. There are three styles of cut pile carpeting:

Saxony: The most traditional style of carpeting. The most comfortable, but show a lot of traffic.
Textured Saxony: More available styles, but more casual than Saxonies. They show less footprints and vacuum marks than Saxony carpets.
Frieze: More informal style, but very durable and minimize footprints and vacuum marks.

Loop Pile Carpet

Loop pile carpeting is typically more durable than cut pile carpet installation, which makes it perfect for high traffic areas, such as stairs, hallways, and recreational areas. It comes in two basic styles:

Level Loop: All loops are equal in height. And as such, the carpet will have a very uniform look.
Multi-Level Loop: The individual loops of carpet will have varying heights. This creates more texture to your carpeting and helps hide a less-than-pristine clean floor.

What is the best carpet for __________?
This is probably the number one question we receive. Whether it is your bedroom, hallway, stairs, or basement, we can help you make the right selection. The type of carpet you choose should be based upon two main factors:
1. Traffic
  - High traffic areas, such as stairs, hallways, recreational rooms, and living rooms, should use a more dense, lower pile carpet
  - Low traffic areas, such as bedrooms can use less dense, higher pile carpet.
  - Potential for Staining
    
    High potential areas, such as youth and children rooms, should use a carpet material which is more stain resistant.
    
    Low potential areas, such as adult bedrooms, can use a more traditional material such as wool or nylon.

Can I use carpet in my basement?
Yes. One of the benefits of carpeting over solid hardwoods is that it can be used throughout the home, including the basement. The only recommendation for using carpet on a concrete slab is that you use a carpet cushion (commonly referred to as padding) underneath the carpet to increase the comfort.
What materials are used in manufacturing carpet?
Originally carpet was made up of wool. With advances is technology, carpet can now be made of nylon, polyester, or polypropylene in a huge variety of patterns and colors.
What is carpet pile?
Pile is the material your feet touch. It is the upper layer of material that is attached to the carpet backing. Pile length is referred to as high or low. Pile type is either cut pile or loop pile. Both length and type affect durability and feel.
